melanistic texas ratsnake?

westtexas May 01, 2005 10:13 PM

i came across a 4 foot tx. ratsnake. ive seen many in the wild and i know they tend to darken up as they get bigger. the one i came across was the darkest i have ever seen. i was wondering how dark they can get before being considered melanistic? i could still see the blotches though. the pictures i took came out horrible, thx, troy.

I have seen some pretty dark ones that were mostly black with just a faint pattern and some reddish skin showing in between.

Here's pic of a dark one (with no red) from Freestone county, TX.
