My 2 5-inch RES need a 100 gallon tank but they cost a fortune!! Help!

mperetz May 01, 2005 11:16 PM

Does anybody have any idea how/where to get a 100 or so gallon tank that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? It looks like I'm going to have to spend about $800 for a tank/stand - at the very least. And that's without a new filter and heater (which I'm not sure which to get either).

All of a sudden this hobby got too expensive for me! Yikes! I've tried Aquabid.com and eBay - 99% is local shipping only - and nothing is near NY - it all seems to be CA.

I'm so TIRED of looking - I have easily spent a dozen hours total looking for a decent set-up.

I guess I'll probably have to bite the bullet...

Is that 25 or 2.5 inch???? A 25 inch RES simply doesn't exist. If you need a large tank and are not overly concerned with appearances, go to your home improvement or hardware store and pick up a large "underbed" plastic storage container. I use many of these and they are much cheaper and easier to dump, clean and handle than an aquarium. Alternative: make a wooden frame to your desired dimensions and go to your local water plant garden and pick up a few feet of pond liner. Fit it to your frame. You can even add a sloping ramp (as I did ) for ease of basking. Plastic stock tanks from Farm and Fleet or Tractor Supply Company (or your locql tack shop) are a bit more expensive but very servicable.

Yeah, it may be better finding a baby pool or what the other person here said. Now that summer is coming on, you can put them outside or on your pation-providing you have on-and then see what you can find.

Aquariums are not that good for turtles anyways. Search around at flea markets and garage sales, look for bargains, see if you can make something different.

build a box out of playwood, then put the pond liner in it. I did that and its in my basement. Kinda a inside pond, only cost me 100 bucks or so

I think he was talking about 2 turtles that are 5 inches each.
