Regurgitation Question...

gzyv15a May 02, 2005 05:32 AM

I normally feed my MBK four fuzzies once a week. She gobbles them down with no problem, but this week she regurgitated all four of them in one nasty shot. My question is can i be feeding her too much? Or should i give her more than seven days in between feedings? She's a normal heathly two year old about 36 inches long.

Hello, four fuzzies for a 3 foot snake is more of a snack than a meal. I highly doubt you're over feeding the snake. It could be a few things...did the snake over heat? Did you clean the cage with any strong cleaner? Did you handle it soon after eating? Could it possibly have been a bad batch of mice[rotten]? If the snake has been pooping normal, and does not have anything that feels solid in its belley it should be OK. I would not feed it for 10-14 days and see if it holds down its next meal. Just make sure it has access to clean fresh water. Hope this helps.

Tom,

Thanks for the input. I cleaned two tanks next to my MBK. I used a 5% bleach solution. I'm hoping that was what caused it.

Since she regurged I would wait a few days and feed a pink. If she holds it down wait a few more days and then go to a fuzzy. Then wait a few days again and the next meal go to a weaned mouse (hopper, crewcut or whatever you call them). If she regurges any of the above get some flagyll* or take the snake to an experienced snake vet. Find a vet that keeps colubrids themselves or you will be stuck with a high vet bill.

*flagyll must be administered once every ten days (2x) with no food offered in between.

but this week she regurgitated all four of them in one nasty shot

how much time between feeding and regurge?
Go to a single large food item like a two weaned mice.

My question is can i be feeding her too much?

no

Or should i give her more than seven days in between feedings?
no

Four fuzzies is not very nutritious for a 36" snake. After you figure out the problem switch to larger mice.

Occasional regurgitations will happen, especially with juveniles, and most especially when they are in new housing that has much space. (Large spaces intimidate hatchlings.)

My new Cal King had such a problem, and Forum users urged me to see a Vet. ("Ameron! Why wait!!" They were fools, and they cost me $73!!! Had I waited another 3 days I wuld have saved the money and realized that my snake was fine.

Only if the pattern repeats weekly should you be alarmed. Your snake may have just been feeling poorly one day, or just was not very hungry.

Moral of story: Never let yourself do any knee-jerk reaction to anything your snake does. Document, watch across several days, then decide if further action is needed.

all the advice below is good, and here's another thought: any chance the animal's just gone into shed--or might in the next day or so? osmetimes snakes are more likely to regurg if they eat while they're in-shed, when most snakes pass up meals anyway. i've seen perfectly healthy snakes regurg, wondered why, and then the next day or so seen that they've turned blue, and i figure i've pretty well found the explanation. it's worth observing, at least, as data for the future. I record sheds so i can tell about when a snake's going to go into its next shed, just in case.
