Nesting & incubation questions, please help.

ohannah May 02, 2005 10:20 AM

Hi

I've read different info, so please confirm: should I keep snake eggs inside plastic containers with the lids ON or OFF (with or without the lids) inside a commercial incubator with clear transparent top?? Could light be problematic?

Also, I use transparent nesting boxes this year instead of opaque ones, should these be okay?

Thank you in advance.

I would keep them on with small air holes on the sides not the tops. If you have holes on the top of them they could get condensation on the eggs themselves and could rot. I built an incubator to serve my own needs and I use the rectangular plastic
take out containers. I put these on shelves where I have low powered fans (computer fans) pushing the air around coming off
of a shoebox filled with water and a heavyduty aquarium heater
inside, I keep the lid on it with just a few holes to let the steam escape this keeps the whole setup at a decent humidity and with a digital thermometers probe inside of the incubator I can dial in the best tempeture with the thermostate on the heater.
I keep it in between 74 and 82 degrees F I prefer it at 78-80, I find I have the best success at these temps. This is my third year breeding colubrids and I hope its another good season. I learned from my mistakes hard way my first year I lost 80% of my eggs. But with the system I came up with I didn't any last year.
