kinda silly questions (plastic box)

Lia May 02, 2005 11:25 AM

Hi
If something is listed like this-
Cambro Food Box Clear 18x26x9
Item: 4805

Polycarbonate, NSF. Non-porous, smooth surface resists staining. Temperature range: -40°F to 210°F (-40°C to 99°C)
That means its 18 inches wide 26 inches long and 9 inches high or the 26 inches high and 9 inches wide?
Also if it saids upto 210 that means it can definately handle a heat pad placed on one side that runs steady 100 degrees?
Any help would be great. Its for a scarlet kingsnake I think this will be good atleast its clear.
Thanks.
Lia

That box is 26" long, 18" wide, and 9" tall. I have used that box and it is excellent for displays that maintain some of the space and cost savings of a plastic tub.

It can handle your heat pad no problem.

Wow great thats great for what I needed . Its for a scarlet kingsnake. Going to order it. Did you drill holes on the top or sides?
I am not going to stack it. Just wanted something lightweight and bigger than a 10 gallon tank.
I saw they have a sliding top/cover to it locks on and slides open you think thats better than the reg top which top did you use?
thanks

I either drilled holes in the top or put the box in a rack system with an 1/8" gap. I don't believe I ever drilled holes in the sides of the Cambro box or the Rubbermaid equivalent - I have used both.

BTW, the Cambro box is better since its completely clear.

Yes the one I am going to order the cambro clear box. I am not sure if it comes with lid or not the site just saids box so I emailed them just now to ask.
I am going to drill holes on top I guess thats easy enough It looks perfect for a scarlet kingsnake size wise just waiting on their reply if it comes with lid to than order it.
thanks

I'm pretty sure these come without lids.

Drill through polycarbonate is not as easy as you might think. Buy a decent quality bit and you should be okay.

I think they dont come with the lid either by looking at the pic. I wrote the co waiting for them to let me know so I can order it today.
I intend to place the lid on a thick piece of plywood I have than drill holes through it if it looks hard or tricky I will get it done as not to crack it.
Thanks

You might consider using a soldering iron to make the holes.

This does not make the cleanest hole through the tough polycarbonate used on these boxes. We had several in a lab where I worked and experimented with a lot of different ways to make holes. Melting was not our favorite.

I preferred a high quality titanium drill bit. I have never tried a unibit on these boxes but suspect it would work well.

I am just going to take the lid to a place not far that fixes things they will do it for $1 or 2.
I dont want to crack it.
thanks

Lia,

You won't crack this polycarbonate. Trust me. Just try one hole yourself if you have a drill and decent bit.

On the other hand, that shop might be able to do it cheaper than the bit would cost you.
