New Chuck owner....questions

DixieDiana May 02, 2005 01:20 PM

Hi everyone!

I got my first Chuck at the NC Reptile Expo Saturday.
He is such a sweetheart. I am calling it a him...not sure. He is still small. Very alert and curious.
He is eating well and loves his new cage.
He is in a 65 gal. front sliding door cage I got at the show.
I have playsand as substrate.
He has a basking slate. Temperature of basking site...115
In the middle of the cage he has a rock cave hide and another one on the cool side. He has an artificial plant on the hot side and one in the middle. He likes those....climbs on the leaves.
One question is water. I read that you should keep water at all times in the cool corner. He is walking in it all the time and keeps it dirty. I change it...he walks in it...I change it....he walkes through it. Should water be kept in the cage at all times??
I am feeding mustard greens, squash, sweet potatoes, endive, carrots....is this good choices?
I haven't been able to find a really good care sheet as of yet...Any suggestions?
Any suggestions or help is most appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeanne

Everything else sounds pretty good. The water could cause problems with bacteria infections and such. Tom

Other lizards would certainly need it, but not chucks. As long as you are feeding him what you are he will get all the water he needs from his food. They are able to get every bit of the moisture out of their food. That is why their poop is almost hard as a rock. Remember they are desert animals and are well adapted to that type of environment.
