Breeding Question

Frazenhiemer May 02, 2005 02:05 PM

I'm new to breeding Snakes. I paired up a big male Grey-banded (48"-500g) with a smaller(36"-220g)female GB. I witnessed hook ups between 3-10 Apr. Female began to buck and run on the 10th so I stopped introducing them. Female shed on 25 Apr. I Noticed no lumps indicating being gravid at that time. 29 April I noticed faint lumps upon manual exam. As of 2 May there are visually noticable lumps throughout the lower 1/3 of her body. She was eating like a champ until her shed began. She has since refused all food.

based on the above info and time line, my questions are as follows:

Was that shed her pre egg lay shed, or will it follow. (I have an egg laying box in her enclosure at this time.)
What date would you estimate her to lay?
Is it O.K. to maternal incubate GB eggs?
Is a Hovabator satisfactory as an incubator?

Thanks

My milks and kings usually lay approx 40 days after they begin breeding: based on that (which can range to 50 days) i'd have estimated laying at about May 13. Since you felt no evidence of ovulation it's not likely the apr 25 shed was the pre-lay shed. Also, they usually lay about 10 days after pre-lay shed which would indicate an approx may 5 lay date. it doesn't sound like you're feeling lumps big enough to indicate she's gonna lay in a couple days, but all this is speculation, generality. But based on your descriptions, i think the first round of breeding might have been premature and that you might have wanted to put them together again after that apr 25 shed--even now, you might try it. Can't hurt.

I recommend incubating in airtight containers on a shelf in your snake room. Assuming you're keeping it around 80, that's a fine incubation temp and there's no incubator to malfunction & result in the loss of your eggs in such an accident. Just open the container (like a tupperware container) every 2-3 days and use the lid to fan plenty of fresh air in, then re-seal. I use long-fiber sphagnum moss as an incubatin gmedium, by the way. You can get it at garden centers. Wet it thoroughly, wring it tightly by hand, and you've pretty well got the moisture level nailed. note it's long-fiber, NOT sphagnum "peat" moss. Big diff in the products.

I just like simplicity and this method has worked for me for years. Good luck and let us know what happens.
