Do Chameleons have preferences to whom they like?

Chamcham505 May 02, 2005 02:13 PM

Hello!
Well, I just thought this was an interesting tid bit, and was a bit curious as well.

While I was feeding my chameleon (adult male veiled) my friend entered the room, and he imediatly stopped eating. He focused all his attension towards her, and as she approached him, he puffed up and lunged at her. He has never ever directed this kind of behavior towards me. After she departed the room, he went back to his normal self and began to eat agian. He's fine around people that have the same color hair as me, and look like me, but when a total stranger or someone who doesnt even resemble me enters the room, he goes CRAZY!!!

So, do you think He can tell people apart, and have preferences to who he likes, knows, and trusts opposed to who he dislikes?
I just thought it was interesting that he trusts me, but is deathly afraid of her!

Thank you, and ALL input would be appreciated!

My chams do the same thing, they only eat when I'm in the room, and if some one else comes in, they just eye them down the whole time. I'm not sure its a preferance, but more of a familiarity with you. The cham has associated you with food, and not a threat anymore. When I go into my cham room with my veilds thye rush to the front to the cage to wait to be fed, its rather comical.

I know they do. We do not handfeed our panthers. But, my boy knows and prefers my husband and has since the day he arrived. We thought it was color (as in colored shirts)so for an experiment, we changed colors, changed hairstyle, hat...no hat..before shower.. after shower..and yet he likes my husband best. Bear in mind, I do the feeding...cleaning etc. So I have to say yes, they do have preferences that are NOT based on food. We had four guys over, about the same height, build and offered him a choice...he picked my husband. Go figure.

Now my other panthers are not people friendly.

sounds like your chameleon has realised that you'r not predator, contrary to its original beliefs. As soon as someone else enters the room, it immediately thinks: Oh no, I'd better hide or this thing is going to eat me.
