Is a 75 gallon setup big enough for TWO 5" RES?

mperetz May 02, 2005 04:04 PM

I was told by my local pet shop that I don't need 90 or 100 gallons. I could use some immediate opinions on this.

I can get the larger tanks/stand from him - but he claims I won't need it for them for many, many years - I'm just not sure if he's right. He has the 75 gallon setup in his store -- so maybe he's just pushing it for that reason - I don't know.

It really makes little difference at this point regarding price - it's a couple hundred dollars more for the bigger setups - it's not like I have any of that money so it's all credit anyway.

I don't want to be short-sighted.

Bigger is always better. If you are willing to buy the bigger set up then go for it! Think of it this way, you should have 10gallons for each inch of turtle shell. If you end up with two females you will actually be looking at even bigger. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than 100gallons

That's what I kinda suspected - and I thank you for confirming it. The guy is saying I won't need it for 20 years - but I don't think he's right. I already need it in my opinion.

Where in New York are you located? Also the answer to this question would depend on the sex of you turtles. At 5 inches if they are males they should be developing their long claws and other male characteristics.

The petshop guy is not giving you exact info though. If they are females they will grow fairly large (10 inches) and only in a few years.

One is a male and one is a female as far as the vet can tell. I am in Croton on Hudson, Westchester County, NY 10520

I think it would be fine I have 2 4" in a 30 gallon. If you have a good water level they should be fine.

I don't think so - you are supposed to have roughly 10 gallons per inch of shell - by that formula I should have a 80-90 gallon tank already and they aren't even full grown by any stretch.

Hey! I grew up in Montrose, NY right by you. I even worked at BestWeb for a few months. What petstore do you go to if I may ask??
