Bamboo...

Derek Benson Jul 11, 2003 12:11 PM

Hey,

I was thinking about using some bamboo tubes in some future dart tank, but I wanted to know if it rots after a while? If so, can I put anything non-toxic on it to make it not rot? I am just getting my first darts pretty soon after my fruit fly cultures start going. I'm not putting bamboo in the tnak I'm making now, but wanted to know for later. I'm getting 0.0.3 'green banded' P. aurotaenia. Thanks

Derek

Bamboo tubes don't rot easily. That's one of the reasons they use them as building scaffolding in SE Asia. They are also popular in Japan as decorative water tubes in ponds and artifical streams. The olden-day slalom poles for ski racing used to be made out of bamboo, as well. These really took a beating and lasted for years. I'd put my bet on them not needing further preserving.

We have used bamboo in the desplay tanks at my work. Never have we had any problems with the bamboo rotting!

reasonably priced, at Pier One Imports. They sell bamboo. It holds up very well without anything necessary to preseve it.
