how well can they see?

JLM22 May 02, 2005 10:30 PM

I was just wondering if leopard geckos have poor eyesight or can they see pretty well? I read on a website that they couldn't see that well but I don't know if this is misinformation as I would think most lizards have good eyesight. I also have a green anole and I know that his eyesight depends a lot on how the light changes. Is it the same with leos? Also I haven't handled my leo too much yet since I've only just gotten him but Iwas wondering if I picked him up and let him walk up my arm or maybe put him down somewhere would he try to jump off? Thanks for reading.

LOL I asked this same question not too long ago and someone very helpful posted me a link of some new info that scientists found out. They thought that lizards could only see in black and white and determined things by the colour gradient. But they discovered that they can actually see in colour! Search for it on google or something. Also if your leo is under 8 months old they tend to be very jumpy but there have been some instances where they can be quite calm. I would not recommend handling your leo except from when cleaning. If u go over to my web site go the care sheet, I have written a good handling care guide. Hope this Helps.

Thanks for the reply. The gecko I got actually isn't jumpy at all and he is only about 5 inches long so I don't think he is that old. He will just sit in my hand if I do pick him up which haa only been about three times now. My friend has about 4 of them and his are like this as well. I'm not planning on holding him that much just occasionally. I understand they are probably uncomfortable. Just wanted to know so in case he ever tries to crawl away he wouldn't jump to his death. Thanks for the info.

Well your leo sounds ok! You can handle them about 3 times a week if u really want to. I have a male thats about 2 years old and he loves being handled and sitting on my shoulder. But my female is a yr old and she hates being handled somelike it some don't. Hope this helps.
