You don't mention how old your BP is, but I have a baby who does the same thing - I just attribute it to being small and a little insecure (that whole prey-for-everything issue, after all). And I have an adult male who is the same way - both perfectly healthy snakes, just different personalities from the others. Some people are extroverts, some are introverts - same thing for snakes. I just make a point of getting the shy ones out for the same exercise and gentle handling as my others; that way they don't get too anti-social! Maybe yours will become more secure with time and handling. Good luck!

ya, i've been handling him as much as poss'ble...but he's a bit of satan reincarnated...lol...very very snappy...tempermental...but we're working on it...i'm not sure exactly how old he is..i've only had him for three months, and he's almost 3 ft...so not sure of his age...or even sex for that matter...but jus call him a he...named him Battle (movie clockwork orange.) well, my boy friend named him that...lol...

Aww!!! He is a naughty handsome little fellow!

mmellott Jul 11, 2003 03:14 PM

yes, that he is...he's just a normal bp but he's my first and i love him to death..we're kinda alike with the att. problem anyhow...lol..perfect for eachother...

Did you just get him? I would wait about a week or until it has adjusted to the new home before start handling and feeding; it could stress them out.

no, i didn't just get him, i've had him 3 months...

AFAIK, a snake that spends his time doing nothing in his hide is a very happy snake. Sounds like all is well in his world. But, I tape sheets of paper on the left side of the enclosure, as well as the left third or so of the front and back. It lets in some light still, but gives them the impression that it's saver to come out because they're not totally exposed. I haven't done it with my BP, but it made the difference for a very skiddish milksnake barely brave enough to venture out for water.

Maybe some tall smooth rocks spaced out enough so that your snake could hide to an extent, but still be out in view.

Just ideas. No clue if it'll work for BP's; mine comes out as soon as the lights go off.

i have covered all but half of the front of the tank just recently hopeing to do just what you suggested...

Yes, my snake is doing the same thing right now during the day, hidding out. I find that using a cutout cardboard box hideout is better than the regular half hollow log. It's like a little cave with only one entrance. My snake loves it. The basking spot is about 90 degree, thats where he is spending his time.

same with mine...
