Ra and Isis separate (just for now I hope)

sunfox May 03, 2005 08:51 AM

As you may have already read, I've had to separate Ra and Isis due to some biting on her part (I just had to tap her nose to get her to let go). Thank god Ra doesn't seem to be any worse for wear. She started behaving like this after laying her eggs so it makes me think it's a hormonal thing. I've moved her to the 40-gallon tank for now (this way, I can make sure she's eating her veggies and getting her weight back up). I'm hoping that she'll soon forget about her eggs and get out of "mommy" mode before putting her back in with Ra. I am also going to rearrange the furniture in the tank (I'm not happy with the placement of certain things anyway) and add a very ugly aloe plant that they can destroy at their leisure. My goal is to make them think they are in a whole new area and get back to living the way they were. If this doesn't work, I am ready to keep them separate permenantly (except for breeding season).

Also, I've lost one of the eggs yesterday but I had the feeling this one was going to go bad anyway. The eggs remained dented (the others firmed up) with a water-ballon consistency. The clincher was that it was starting to mold. The rest of the eggs look ok but a few may be going yellow. I have at least 3 that still look very white and firm. Should I get very lucky and hatch out a little one, I (and my husband) have decided we will keep it.

Hey just a question about your malis, how big do they get? And what's a preferable enclosure arrangement? If i keep this one i'm taking care of, i'll be making a plywood back and side enclosure with glass on the front and a screen top (we made one for our beardie and he loves it...he doesnt run into walls or anything!).

thankya

yeah, the water ballon like eggs usually are the infertile ones. i think i read somewhere once (but not about uros eggs specifically) that them turning really yellow/brown means too much moisture but perhaps someone with more egg laying experience can comment on that.
i hope you get many babies!
