Black Milk Snakes

stevemaa May 03, 2005 09:12 AM

Hi everyone, regarding Black Milks, I have a yearling pair, wonderful animals, just very hard to handle. Never bite or anything like that they just seem very nervous and afraid. Is this typical of this species at this age or are these animals usually so nervous?

Yes, the young are very whippy. That will fade with time. Due to the whippy nature of the young ones I did not handle mine much.

Once your milks hit 3 or 4 years and get about 4 feet or so they start to calm down very nicely.

Thank you Dann, the word whippy is very accurate, when I handle it can sometimes be a chore simply because they can become so frenzied.

I have two that are like night and day, or I should say Jekyll and Hyde. The female is calm quiet, easily handled. The male ia a psycho, twitches and bites till you get him out of the cage then he is fine. He will rear back and strike whenever I open his cage, with or without food at hand. Both are just shy of two years old, the female is 45", and the male is 35". Different bloodlines.
