When to start counting

toshamc May 03, 2005 12:11 PM

OK - my big girl ovulated on 4/16 & 17 (I shared the picts). She shed last night at 15 days post ovulation not 21. So should I count 30 days from shed or should I count 51 days from ovulation? We had planned a river trip for Memorial weekend which would be cutting it close to her laying date if we started counting on 30 days after shed - maybe not the best weekend to be out of town, but if it's 51 days post ovulation, we should be good.

Honestly, now I'm starting to think she's not even gravid. Maybe those were just giant follicles she was reabsorbing or something. I guess we'll see.

Trust me.....it will be a long 30 days.........if you know what I mean.

This time of year kills me....everything is in slow motion.

Have fun!

Hi Tosha,

If you really observed ovulation, (huge giant swelling), then she is gravid. After ovulation, you can't see or feel much of anything for close to a month. The snake looks pretty normal - and other than not wanting to eat, there are not many symptoms that it's gravid. I usually can start feeling my eggs about a week or two after pre-lay shed - but even then you really have to know what you are feeling for. Eggs do become much easier to feel as you near laying time.

Go on your trip - I bet she'll lay a few days after you return!

I agree. I'm in the same boat. I have a couple that I'm unsure of. But I should find out by the first week of June. I hate waiting.

I have my fingers crossed on my female.I witnessed several lock ups and what I thought was ovulation. This would be my first clutch of babies if in fact she is Gravid. For 3 weeks straight she hasn't eaten and refuses to take food. When it's put in front of her she goes the other way,but at night and late afternoon she still gets real active and acts like she's looking for food.I tried to feed her when this occured and the same result.I know that is a balls most active time of the day but I kinda figured if she was Gravid she wouldn't be active.Keep in mind this would be my first clutch even though I have been keeping snakes for 5 years now.I'll put in her pic taken 3 days ago and btw she is 5 years old.

Had a female looked exactly like yours and din't think she was anywhere near to laying as my bigger girls but she gave me 4 real nice size eggs the other night ...was bred to a 100% het pied male on top of all that ...one never knows when dealing with animals ...be patient and I'm sure she'll surprise you whenit's time ..hope that helps !!!

The girls this year have been running a little early for me this year actually, they have been in the range on 23 to 27 days POS ( Post ovulation shed ) My abient room temps are 83 to 85 and the hot spot in the cage is at 90 degrees. My suggestion is be ready around day 21.
