Not Eating

DixieDiana May 03, 2005 01:50 PM

My new Uro...I have had since Saturday....doesn't appear to be eating. At least I can't tell where anything is missing from his bowl. I thought maybe he wasn't eating because I was watching him, so I started putting his food in and then leaving the room for awhile. Some of it has been moved around a couple times, but I have seen him walk through it a couple times also, so I don't know it he is eating it or moving it by walking through it.

Any suggestions please?

Example of foods...
Today I gave him mustard greens, squash, sweet potatoes, blueberries, carrots, kiwi

Yesterday...Mustard greens, squash, sweet potatoes, endive, carrots

I am dusting with a small amount of Repcal and Herptivite

I gave him a brief warm soak yesterday....only about three minutes or so, I was afraid of him getting cold, seems the water cools so fast.

try some peas and soy beans. both can be found in frozen foods at grocery stores. i prefer cutting them in half for my juvenile and for the soy beans i also peal off the skins on them. these were the first things my uro started eating when i got him.

This is a very common problem with wc uros. It is difficult for them to make the transition from complete freedom to being kept in a cage. Even though they may not appear to be stressed, you should probably assume that they are. You can try a little warmed peas as the other post said. Sometimes taking a few legs off crickets and mixing them with their salad will stimulate their interest by the movement. Bee pollen can also help. Try not to handle him at all for now. What you may be thinking is bliss could be sheer, paralyzing fright when you handle him. Cover all four sides of the cage if you have to. Clean it at night when he goes into his hide and place a few greens in the cage early before he wakes up. Good luck.

It took George and Martha a good week to be eating regularly when I got them from Morgana. I finally had to lay off the supplements and additional veggies. I gave mustard greens and dandelion flowers and peas in a separate dish. Now they're eating nice balanced diets with supplements, but that really seemed to be the thing. Also, I was used to chopping the greens really, really small for some of my other smaller lizards and the uros really seemed to prefer it bigger. He's only been there since the weekend though- I wouldn't worry too much yet.
