Showcase versus Vision Cages anybody?

esoteric May 03, 2005 02:15 PM

Has anybody purchased or had any experience with the Showcase stackable cages that so many dealers are offering? Due to recent acquisitions I need to expand my caging and I require stackability. I've already got two Vision Cages and a shopping list of compaints about using them and was considering the Showcase cage as an option... the problem being no one actually stocks them to look at and those selling them haven't necessarily seen them (catalog items only).

Anything I buy, it's basically a given that I'll modify it. For the Visions, they seem to collapse and bow under a moderate load (sand substrate), the doors slide poorly and are difficult to extract. I've got problems with sand in the sliders, a heater that shifts slightly melts the housing, etc. Mostly very basic engineering problems but I have zero time to cope with this sort of problem on an already pricy unit. To stack more than two, I can see needing to wrap them in plywood racks and that's really the antithesis of their design.

I have no time to fabricate my own enclosures.

Thoughts and opinions? Thanks.

I'm very interested to see what the response here is. I've been really looking at a lot of plastic or pvc caging as I need to streamline my cages (aquarium warehouse is not really the decorating theme I'm going for). Are you looking at any other cage brands or just those two?

I was never a fan of vision, they always appeared too dark for my taste. I am interested in seeing the new display cages also, but don't think I will see any until October at the NARBC show. I was always interested in Doug Dix's cages, but he no longer ships them out. I have used Aquatic America cages and they have worked well for me. The uro cages are 4x2x2x2, some a little shorter due to shelf limitations, all glass, screen tops, sliding glass doors. He makes them however I ask for them. Downside is they are really heavy, tracks fill with substrate and they do not ship anywhere. Is there such thing as a "perfect" cage? I'm still looking myself. Good luck.

Interestingly enough, one of the Showcase cages just appeared on my front porch 5 minutes ago. It was the part of my birthday gift that I didn't know about. I won't know anything for a few days or weeks of experimenting, and I only have one (so no info on stacking), but I can post opinions on this unit shortly. It's the 4'x 2' model. Also, I use millet substrate, so they wouldn't be as heavy overall for me, but I do use heavy stacked slate basking stacks. I'll let you know what I can.

Ridiculously overpriced happy birthday to me!

I was also looking at the Showcase cages. If you have any thoughts for this cage being a good one for Uro's, please post. I don't want to make any lighting or mod's if necessary. Max will need a new home if he continues to grow the way he has the last few months!
