Leopard Gecko Genetics Calculator

chadlong Jul 11, 2003 01:03 PM

This is my first time to post here but I recently became interested in leopard geckos and started lurking around this forum a couple of weeks ago. One of the first things I noticed was that a lot of people seem to have trouble calculating the genetics of different crosses. I had a little free time and I happen to be a web designer/developer so I threw together a site that will calculate the possible outcomes. You can give it a try at www.geckogenetics.com. I'm sure there are still some bugs to be worked out so if you come across one then please fill out the bug report form and I'll try to take care of it. I also welcome any comments/suggestions on ways to improve the site. I hope some of you find it useful.

i like it, its pretty easy to use, it can teach people a lot. but i think that it may be a little off on the odds for patternless tremper or blizzard and any albino being mixed. but i also think it'd be to hard to get the right odds, so very good.

I'm confused why you think the odds are off! A simple punnet square is all you need to figure them out. The percentages shown are the % for the eggs that a selected male and female will make. Now if it just so happens that the eggs that are patty albino or blazing blizzard don't hatch, thats a different story. But the % for the eggs on his calculator are correct.

using a punnet square, yes, but the way it turned out in real life contradicts that, so a punnet square seems useless in this case. i think the estimated odds of hatching a blazing blizzard from double het parents was 1/1000. the punnet square isnt always correct, because some genes are harder to mix then others.

Yes, the odds are calculated on a purely theoretical mathematical basis and, as such, they do not take into account any special cases such as blazing blizzard appears to be. There is no way to fix this since the exact reason for the icompatibilities isn't known. If I can find a relatively simple way then I'll make it so that anytime results indicate a blazing blizzard a message will be shown indicating this caveat in case the user isn't aware of it already.

OK, I see. We are just looking at different things. You are talking about the percentage yields of hatchlings while I'm looking at percentage yields of the eggs before they die or hatch.
