Chubby Frog Sloughing skin

leapin4lizards May 03, 2005 03:24 PM

Hi
I work at a pet store and we have had a Chubby Frog there whom besides having cataracts over both eyes has been sloughing off skin, his back has a large white spot on it with teeny bit of red in it. He has seen the vet and her treatment has been Baytril and a sulfa bath. I have turtles and lizards and some other creatures but no frogs. He is not getting better. Today a higher up said someone had to adopt him out ASAP so I took him home, they wanted him out of the store.

It sounds fungal from what disease information i have found on here. One treatment is hydrogen peroxide baths and then malachite green is mentioned. What should I do, do you have any advice? He is not eating but then again he can't really see, if at all he is detecting some things and moves in reaction and he found the moss pile I put in his area. Please let me know if I should try any of those treatments. Thanks, I am thinking his prognosis is not good. But want to try. Please also advice me on how to get him to eat, with not seeing well and his disease. I very much would appreciate advice!

Thanks,

Karen Moore

Id recomend putting him on clean sanitary paper towel with a water dish and some moist spagnum moss. Dont use those treatments IMO. Cataracts over the eyes may be from malnutrishment or unsanitary conditions(over time). I know several treatments are actually lethal to amphibians and invertibrates I believe Malachite green is one of these. I believe polysporin is ok for amphibians and you might try putting some on his wound. Otherwise just make sure to keep him moist and sanitarty useing only dechlorinated water. (Frogs shed their skin to get rid of irritations sometimes, especailly when theyre sick). Goodluck and keep us posted.

It doesn't make sense to take your frog to the vet, and then abandon followup. Take the frog back to the vet and tell them what you have told us. They will steer you in the right direction. Definately do not do any of your suggested treatments.

As general advise for you and others reading this thread, I will say that researching your pet's illness is very interesting, and you may be able to share some insite with the vet who is directing treatment. It does not however take the place of a vet, or have any clout to direct the proper course of action. Indeed some vets have more experience than others with herps, and if you have a bad feeling about your current vet, there is nothing wrong with seeking a referal to another.
