building chameleon cage ???

small_town36 May 03, 2005 04:21 PM

i was just wondering if its ok to have the roof of the cage be solid wood and a side or two. The reason why i ask is because i had a terrarium to start off that was full mesh and keeping humidity was a b^#ch. so whatg is the best was to make a enclosure too have good air flow but at the same time regulate good humidity.

OK, I would say the top needs to be screen so the light can pass down from above. My chams seem to respond better to lights from above. THe cages I designed and built for veileds are 3Wx2Dx4H, all screen. I have a home made misting system, that waters often, the water passes throught the bottom of the cage to a cement mixing tub. The humidity varies throught out the day but I havent seen any ill effects. Live plants have really been a help with humidity. They transpire the water back into the air, so even if the entire cage isn't high in humidity, some spots are, and my chams can find them.
