Hole size for Indigo nest/hide box?

Mike Meade May 03, 2005 06:41 PM

I am connecting two 4' cages together to provide a temp gradient and dark hide area. The cages have 2.75" vent holes that I would like to use for the connection. I have some PVC fittings that would fit the hole perfectly and connect to 2" pipe.

I know snakes can fit into small holes, but is 2" big enough for a big gravid indigo? I'm guessing yes, but I'd appreciate other opinions.

Thanks!

Mike

My large gravid females would have a very difficult time getting through a hole of that size. It would require a great deal of abdominal pressure which could cause problems for the developing eggs. But, perhaps others feel that this provides plenty of room (I just know that my big girls would struggle). Sounds like a great idea and hope it works out.

2'' is cutting it a bit too close i'd think. a larger hole won't throw her off and she'd be more comfortable in her comings and goings while she sets up house......

I used 3" holes in my enclosure that I just built.....after seeing a friends adult Indigo and seeing hundreds of pictures of others I am sure that a gravid female would def. have some trouble with only 2" to squeeze through.

Seems too small. I would double diameter. Why take a chance? Good luck with her.

My snakes are subadults now, so this "big gravid female" was a hypothetical for the moment at least. I was considering how to do this and the first fitting I picked up fit the cage so I tricked myself into hoping it would fit the snake.

I might set one up this way now to see how a snake reacts and learn any lessons that might be handy when I modify more cages.

When I do the "adult" versions I will use bigger pipe thanks to all of you and your good advice.

Thanks!

Mike
