calcium supplement

ripper May 03, 2005 08:07 PM

Does anyone know if it is ok to use a calcium carbonate supplement that I bought at a garden store or not? Thank you.

I would not take that chance. Some inexpensive, unrefined sources of calcium may contain substances that can be toxic if ingested. It wouldn't hurt plants, but it might hurt your tegu.

Miner-All is a good calcium/multi mineral supplement that's made for herps and is available with added vitamin D for indoor-housed herps (Miner-All I) or without D for herps that get natural sunlight outdoors (Miner-All O).

There are other good calcium supplements as well. For example, the San Diego Zoo Diet formula calls for bone meal.

Calcium powder goes a long way and the good stuff is not expensive. I've used Miner-All Indoor and my animals are fine. I wouldn't chance it with the garden store stuff.

Thanks Bill. I don't think I'll use it after all. No point taking risks just to save a buck.
