Wax Worms

LeoGeck May 03, 2005 08:46 PM

I recently bought some wax worms, a pack of 50 that you can usually find at any pet store, and i brought it home and gave it to my juvi leo and he loved them, but 2 or 3 days after i would open the container and there would be like dead ones all black and brown. I got kinda pissed cause they were like 3 bucks. Does anyone know why this is? Is it the temp. i kept them in my room which is about 70 degrees . That might be it, should i just get new ones and just keep them in the fridge? HELP PLEASE!!! Thanks

They stay alive longer when they are kept in room temperature, and when you don't feed them at all. Also, you have to make sure that there is no moisture in the container with them. I keep mine in hamster cedar chips in an airated container, and they live pretty long.

Also part of the wax worm life cycle is turning dark brown or blue before they become moths. It is often associated with they being dead because they do seem to die a lot at this time.

Wax worms should be refridgerated at 45-55 degrees if you want them to last and not change over, but not die. MOst pet stores do keep theyre waxies in refridgeraters. I know we do.
