Feeder Fish to Pacmans?

CokeofMan Jul 11, 2003 01:22 PM

I know I should not feed my pacman mice, but how about the fish (as an ocational treat only)? If so what kind of fish and how often can I feed it fish?

Oh yeah, one more thing: Has anyone read the book Horned Frogs byy R. Hunziker (I think). I've heard it's pretty good, and I'm wondering if anyone has any oppinion of this book or can give me a tip of another book.

Thanks in advance

Feeder fish are as bad if not worse than mice. They are loaded with parisites and have no nutritional value because most stores dont feed them, so if they do eat they are eating the decaying flesh of the already dead ones in the tank.

Where are you getting your information? My frogs have been fed feeder goldfish for 3 years without any problems and the ones I had before that that I had to get rid of were fed feeder goldfish. They are all protein and calcium so how can you say there is no nutritional value to them? Proteing and calcium in food is all horned frogs need. I have owned horned frogs for over 5 years now and their diet consists of goldfish and when i am getting ready to breed them a mouse every other week for 2 months before I cycle them.

Is it ok to feed feeder goldfish to frogs as a staple diet?

If it wasn't ok to feed them goldfish like that, then my frogs would have had problems long ago. just make sure to not use suppliments while feeding the goldfish or they may get oo much calcium. A lot of people keep trying to say that goldfish are too fatty, well even if a fish has fat on it it isn't much at all, because all a fish basically is is protein and calcium to a frog.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with feeding fish to pacmen, but it's not natural though. But everything natural is not always good. In the wild pacmen mostly eat worms and other frogs, and since we know other frogs might contain parasites we don't do that for our pets.

I feed goldfish to my pacmen all the time. I also make sure that they are healthy, swimming and aleart and no side of rot or fungi on them. If you think the fish isn't being fed properly, then buy some flakes and feed them for yourself.

The best way to feed the horned frog a goldfish is to remove it from its container and drop the fish infront of it, or if the fish is larger u can hold the fish with tongs infront of the frog and it will bite at it, this wont be as stressful since u dont move him around.

i would not get the Ray Hunziker book if I were you. It has pretty pictures but in my opinion it's just some basic info and a lot of wrong info, especialy on feeding and setup.

There's plenty of websites and this message board on the web with lots and lots of info.

Personally I have some extra aquariums set up to put my feeder goldfish in, and I make sure they eat for a few days before I give them to my frogs. But i also buy a lot of goldfish and have an overlap in the stock, so I can afford to wait a few days before I feed them to them.

Well, imo, feeding a variety is a good thing. If they weren't so adaptable, then they would become extinct. I think the problem with people and pet frog is that they feed the frog too much and too often and in addition they feed them mice and fish. This is very bad. They actually supposed to be fed variety of inverts only once a week and you can throw in mice and fish every other month or every month or so for variety. Someone on here said the mice contain high level of vitamin A which interfere with the metabolism of calcium, so I would suggest you dust you inverts with REptical-multivitamin that contains no vitamin A, but instead beta-carotine that the animals use to produce calcium. So the key is, really, not to over feed the animals.

Ok Knot you need to explain why you feel goldfish are bad for them. Because all anyone can say is someone told me. Noone has any data to back up their claims that goldfish are bad, and if you can find it then show me.

I said it's ok...just don't overfeed them.
