Balls and Cats

bps516 May 04, 2005 07:17 AM

I noticed that there are a few others that have cats and balls out there. I have been concerned about my cats being around my bp. I keep the bp in a room with the door shut most of the time. Has anyone had problems with the bp escaping and having altercations with their cats?

I've had cats longer than I've had balls (that don't look right :|) Point is, the cats see the snakes loose for whatever reason and they usually fluff up and high tail it to the other room. I guess balls are big enough to look like a real threat.

It would depend on the cat. Some cats will flee from anything, others will attack anything that moves. I would deffinitely keep them separate as a cat can serious damage a snake, if it decides it is something to attack or play with. Then again, a large ball python could harm a cat, either by biting or constricting, especially with smaller cats and kittens. A cat may quickly lose interest in a ball python, considering they are more prone to just not move when something new comes along. Cats tend to be more interested in things that move, or smell tasty.

Hello Bryan,

When Celia moved down here to work with us at EbN, she brought her 3 year old Bengal Cat along with her. Since we live together (Celia and I) and I have somewhat of an allergy to cats I told her that he must live at the facility. We really didn't know how that would work out but there was no way we were getting rid of Bailey (the cat)

After a few months he got that hang of things... jumping, climbing and overall enjoying himself way more in a 2000 sq ft facility vs. a 200 sq ft apartment. Nevertheless I was concerned with how he would act around animals, particularly escapees. Well... one day I goofed and didn't close a box all the way and had a yearling Corn Snake get out. A few days later as I'm cleaning cages... Bailey walked up with the Corn Snake in his mouth. The snake was not happy about being carried like that but there wasn't a scratch on it. This has happened several times since then over the last year and a half.

On another note... I have some baby racks in our baby room that utilize the commonly available, side vented, plastic carrying boxes commonly sold in pet stores (i.e. Kritter Keepers, etc.) Bailey has so much fun catching snakes that he has figured out how to use his front claws to slide tubs out of this rack to give himself more work to do! Damn CAT! HAHA Well... needless to say he is banished from the baby room. He has always stayed away from the larger snakes but I worry about the Burmese Pythons because the always pay more attention to Bailey than he does to them.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend cats near ANY animals because they are too unpredictable and efficient predators when they want to be. Bailey is obviously an exception but we still pay a lot of attention to what he is doing. One thing is for sure... he is a GREAT rodent room employee... never worry about escapees in there! They are TOAST!

Good luck with your furry, purry friends... they can certainly be hell on feet at times!

cats and snakes do not mix well together, snakes would make a tasty meal to a cat. One time on tv, i saw a bobcat wailing on a rattle snake. the cat would swipe it with its paw and then spring almost 4 feet in the air and escape the striking of the rattler!! after that its been a no brainer for me, snakes and cats dont mix

also incase anyone didnt know this. House cats are the number 1 killer felines. They kill thousands of lizards, bugs over 1000 species and its all just for fun, seeing as they dont need to hunt.

if u have a cat thats cool with your snake then good for you, but dont take your chances

Hello,

I didn't say that having cats around was a good idea. Actually I commented against it! Bailey is a good animal around here... no sense getting rid of a lovely pet.

So much for a nice story...

I thought your message was quite clear that it was not a good idea to have cats around herps. As far as I am concerned your story was comical and understood as intended. One of my cats has his own aquarium that he rubs up against purring as the fish swim by... it doesn't mean I think he is a completely reposible pet owner, nor does it mean that I think cats in general should have their own fish... He just adds comic relief. Something everyone needs! Thanks for the stories, I thought they were funny!

Does this look like the face of a cold hearted snake killer?

Eddie has shown interest in the snakes, but he likes mice much more. Once I thought I would introduce him and a mouse. I held the mouse out and let him sniff it. In one swift motion he snatched it and shoved the WHOLE thing in his mouth, and ran into the kitchen.

I got the mouse back unharmed and a little soggy...but it was one hell of a fight to do so.

After that I decided not to introduce him to anything else alive ever again.
