Wild collared of Seaman Mtn.s

niki_athena May 04, 2005 10:50 AM

First, thank you all for the wonderful pics. The baby news is exciting and I can feel the nervousness

My weekend my husband and I went to the Seaman Mtn. Range to look for caves. I went to go herping

We didn't find any caves, but on the last day I was walking down a jeep road and saw a large lizard with a spotted tail running away from me. I looked closer and it ran into a little sagebrush. He was a handsome, C. bicinctores. I didn't want to lose him, so I told my husband, who said he just saw a 5 ft. garter snake hide under an old truck (of all places for a garter to choose to live). I thought I might grab him by the tail and my husband who on the other side of the sage said the lizard then seeing my intention curled his tail up and lifted it somewhat in the air. I distracted him by wiggling all my fingers while my husband snatched him.

He was longer than a foot long, my husband thinks maybe 16 inches. He had a very big head with a pointy snout and wow what a cute dino look when he gaped and twisted his head. This guy could have done havoc on my fingers. I really loved his orange feet, but they didn't show up as well in the photos.

It wasn't to warm day, maybe that's why he didn't run like lightning. Anyways here he is and he's not afraid of us, but doesn't want any more attention.

This is the same trip and I caught to female Side-blotched lizards. I am somewhat more fascinated by the girls albeit less colorful. I just think they have a design like leopard spots. Anyways here's the one that was gravid and she had a bright orange chin.

Hiding in my path I saw spotted fat tail first. I was hoping for a cute lizard as I followed the tail there were no legs but, the rest of a baby rattler came into the picture. He/she was a such a cutie with one black button for a rattle. He/she kept still and quiet until my husband picked it up with a long stick. Then the little one (14-15inches) shook it noiseless rattle while hanging in the air. We moved it near some grass, but rather go in the grass it decided to climb the cliff to go farther from us. My husband snapped a shot of what he called the slowest escape in snake history. We decided to leave that area carefully lest there be more venomous surprises.

I liked the photos of the lizard and the baby rattler. Very neat day I'd say. That collared was huge too. A real giant! I hope you have the camera handy on all your outings. It's a real treat to share the trips with you guys that live out west.
