Question on Crested Gecko morphs

SecretSreptiles May 04, 2005 10:55 AM

Thanks to flamedcrestie, I posted this topic here.

My fiancé' and I are new at cresteds, and are looking into possibly start breeding Crested Gecko's. But for now, we are looking to see what is out there first. For starters, I have a few questions on about there colors and morphs.
My first question is:
What morphs/colors are out there for cresteds?
Are some of the morphs genetic like co/dom or recessive genes?
If so, what morph is dom. or co/dom.?
thanks much in advance.

Also, which morph is more wanted or fancy?

Okay, I'm gonna go out on-a-limb here. As far as morphs go, we've got the dalmations, fires, harlequins, patternless, pinstripes and exagerrated crests (some people consider this a morph also).
They come in an array of colors except green and blue.

And to answer you other question, all the morphs seem to be equally dominant. For example, you can have a harly pinstripe with exageratted crests. (With the exceptions being harlequin and patternless. Obviously you can't have a patternless cresteds with anything except some exagerrated crests.) If I understand correctly, harlequins are just fires with the pattern continuing on the sides and limbs. Hope this answers your question.

thank you for the reply. But which morph is more desired?

ViciousEnvy May 04, 2005 02:04 PM

It all depends on the person, some people like dalmations, some like harliqunes, some prefer certian colors. A lot of people seem to really like pinstripes, reds, creamsicles and so on. Check the classified to see what people are selling and what theyre asking, that may help. this ofcourse is just my opinion not empirically collected data.

My question to those familliar with creteds and other reptiles, take ball pythons for example is..Are crested "MORPHS" really morphs? I dont really think so. When you look at the ball python genetics among other morph species, their morph traits are proven. as in, you can tell when you breed a ball python thats het albino to an albino you will statistically get X, or any other example. their morph traits are all proven to be dom, co-dom, or recessive. When I think of cresteds i thnk its more like breeding people if you will. you have a tall man and a tall women, they most likely will have tall children, but this is not guaranted. cresteds often resemble their parents, but they dont appear to carry genetic morh traits. simmiliar to how people procreate. maybe if there was a true albino crested (i dont know of one yet)then they would have a true morph. but. as of yet, i think the morphs arent really morphs just characterizations of appearances that seem to pass down from parents to children fairly well, some better than others, but not yet proven morph traits that show up from one generation to the next.

This again is just what Ive come decide in my tiny little brain, and is not necessarily right. Anyone else feel the same way? Or differently? Im intersted to hear how others feel about this.

I understand now. I've been into ball pythons mostly all my life, and know a huge amount of info on them. But now we're thinking about going into the crested geckos, I would like to learn more about them, and would like to hear what peoples fav. "color" in a crested gecko. So far I'm liking the reds and the olive great colored ones. The Harley's look cool too.

personally, i like the harlequins, no matter what the color combo, along with well-developed tigers. i've seen a harly/tiger cross from anthony that is just amazing. another "morph" that i dont think was pointed out is the bicolor, often found in brick reds where most of the body is a red color, yet the area between the dorsal crests tends to be more brownish. i have yet to see anything extreme like a bicolor with a brown base and a solid red/orange/yellow dorsum, or anything along those lines. there are some "morphs" that i personally consider intergrades, such as brindles, marbles, and so on. their patterns seem like maybe they originated from something like a tiger. who knows. but as far as the genetic influence of morphs, some more experienced breeders may have their opinions, but from what i've heard/seen, you can get something that looks like one parent or the other, even sometimes that doesnt resemble either directly. then theres some real unique ones out there that defy categorization.

Right you are..I forgot about bi-colors for a minute. Funny thing is that I've got a patterless brick red bicolor juvi with the dorsum being a carmel color. Will post pics when I get a chance.

i get what your saying, and ive been trying to see if anyone has done test breeding to see which colors/patterns are truly "morphs." it seems that patternless might be recessive, as are small crests. my first test bred babies should be ready to acuratly(sp?) "morphed," if you will, in a few months. i bred a red-ish tiger female to a slate and yellowish harly male. im assuming that the offspring will be slate and red orange fires/harlys. only time will tell, haha. but until someone actually conducts many tests and cross breeds and examines the f generations until f3, and writes up the results, its gonna be guess and wait for the eggs to hatch, haha. just my $.02

it seems like red and fire/harlequins and pinstripes are the ones most in demand now...

genetics hasn't been proven yet...you'd definitely need to know at least 3 generations...

I've only hatched eggs from my first colony...on the edge of my seat waiting for the eggs from my 2nd colony to hatch...

my first colony is a pink patternless female, red dalmation male and brindle/tiger female...there used to be a tan and orange fire female in with them as well
the fire female hatched out fire/harlequins also some have partial pinstripe and she also hatched out red patternless and red dalmation and red bicolor
my brindle/tiger female has hatched out red patternless, red dalmation, yellow/tan/orange/pastel orange (hard to define lol) brindle/tiger (to varying degrees) and some with dalmation
the pink female has hatched out red bicolor and red/pink (unsure still) patternless and dalmation, some with hints of pinstripe

will post a lot of pics lol...hope they help
