Vanilla or imitation vanilla

tigerlilie2 May 04, 2005 11:04 AM

I would like to reduce the "Smell" of my breeder mice and have read about adding vanilla to the water. Do you ad imitation vanilla or pure vanilla to the water, or does it matter?

Thanks for all the help =)

It's been years since I've used vanilla so I may be wrong about this, but............
Both types of vanilla will work but the imitation vanilla won't clog (or gum up) the water valves.....or at least it's less likely to.

I was wondering if anyone else saw the ad on kingsnakes classifieds for a product called "Healthy Habitat"? It's for cleaning cages, but the guy says he uses it in the rodents water to reduce odor.

http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=22&de=279900

Says he's been using it for about a half a year with no signs of ill effects to the rodents or the snakes that eat them. But he says it really cuts down the smell.

Not sure how I feel about it, but thought I'd throw it out there for anyone interested.
I think I'd prefer more then his 6 months of "testing". But, who knows???

I use this for deodorizing tanks and it claims to be all natural. It is not a disinfectant so it's probably safe, but I'll stick with vanilla extract in my rodent water tanks.

Been raising rats for years and never heard of this. What is the vanilla water ratio?
