Colorful Rattlesnake

Seen in the Northern Mojave desert area in California City.

length: 3 - 3 1/2 ft.
color: black & salman (pinkish- orange) stripes on top, black & salman checked on sides, yellowish underside
description: very small rattle, about an inch, and a VERY small head

Do a web search for pictures of Speckled Rattlesnakes (Crotalus mitchellii) and I believe you will identify your snake. Look at many pics because this species can vary quite a bit in over all coloration and pattern but your description seems right on the money. Your description does not sound like a Mojave (C scutulatus), Sidewinder (C cerastes), W. Diamondback (C atrox), or a Western (C viridis). I do not recall exactly where California City is but that is about all the species that are found in and around the Mojave Desert in Calif. The Red Diamondback (C ruber) is a ways south of the Mojave.
