Any hints on where to stay or camp in Alterna land, near Del Rio?

Any advice would be appreciated. We are going to drive all over but would like to have a base camp somewhere.

If you'll be in the DelRio area the best place to camp would be Lake Amistad. I really don't know of any other spots in that area. The Amistad campgrounds is a great place to camp.

Camping out is also much safer than staying at the Desert Pubes in Del Rio,......Ooops, I meant the Desert Hills. I can't imagine what came over me.

My wife and I looked at checking in during the weeeee hours of the morning and I knew the place could be a little rough, but had never stayed before so I asked for a key to check the room out first.

I went up, unlocked the door and when I opened it there was a lady asleep in the bed. I quietly closed the door and made sure it was locked as not to wake her up.

Well back at the office there was a guy in there now complaining about his room, so I had to wait my turn to hand the key back. He said he paid for several nights in advance, but could not stay there because (and these were his words) "The cockroaches were scaring his kids". He wanted a refund on all but the one night so he could leave and check in some place cleaner.

Well the service he received was that "only the owner can give refunds" and that the "owner is in Mexico and not expected back any time soon". This to me sounded like a no refunds by default policy.

I don't know how his situation turned out, I ended up tossing the key back and telling my wife it would be better to sleep in the car.

We did find a room later at a much more respectable establishment. But I will never go back there, and I would recommend to anybody looking to see their other options first.

There is a loop 404 I think it is, just past the 27790 intersection heading West. There are a lot of picnic tables out there and I think there might be some port-O-pots out there. The other location is at the lake after you cross the bridge on 277. Sometimes they have the gate closed though. You now have to pay at that one but it's not much.
