Nico is walking on his wrists

Gunilla Jul 11, 2003 01:47 PM

I took care of a male dragon a week ago, and named him Nico. He hasn’t been handled at all the last year so he is absolutely terrified about everything. Because he is so scared I haven’t been able to “examine” him, as I would have liked. Yesterday I noticed that he *sometimes* walks on his wrists – and that they look a little “stiff”. He doesn’t always walk on his wrists – but it happens.

A year ago I rescued a dragon in a very bad condition – and he didn’t make it… But the thing is – that dragon also walked on his wrists – just a LOT worse than Nico. A veterinarian told me that it was – probably - lack of vitamin B.

I have no idea how Nico was cared for. I don’t know how much calcium he got or how much vitamins. I know that he got some, but not how much. It doesn’t LOOK like it is lack of calcium.

I don’t want to take Nico to a veterinarian right now (if it isn’t absolutely necessary, of course!) since he is SO scared and stressed. I don’t want to stress him more than I have to, poor thing.

So far I have sprinkled his vegetables with “Brewers Yeast” and I have also given him some fluid vitamin-B, that I got from a veterinarian some time ago.

Is it possible that it is lack of vitamin-B? What else can it be?

What can I do to help him? How much vitamin-B shall I give him?

/Gunilla

i think you are right in giving him that brewers yeast, you can feed it to him out of a syringe also, they seem to love the taste of that stuff, hopefully that will help him along, poor fellow. I have seen in geckos that walk on their wrists it being a vit B deficiency, have heard it to be the same in dragons, even so i would up his calcium intake also. Hope he gets to feeling better Gunilla, hes lucky to have ya

Hello Gunilla. You poor thing, you're going through to much with Nico. Bless you for trying so hard to make him healthy and happy.

I thought you should know, if you don't already, that Brewer's yeast is extremely high in phosphorus. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus is 1:21. I would be very careful using this if I were you. In my opinion, I'd go to the drug store or health food store and buy a vitamin B complex capsule. You can break the capsules open and sprinkle the vitamin B on the food. Also, vitamin B is water soluable, so you can't overdose on it like you can with calcium or brewer's yeast. I used to be able to buy a liquid form of vitamin B that has a cherry flavor, but the store no longer carries it. I believe you can order it on the internet though. If you're interested I'll see what I can find out. Heck, I'll even ship it to you myself if I can find it here locally. I guess its kind of hard to find.

To tell you the truth, I have heard of beardies walking on their rists before but have never heard of what caused it to happen. I always thought it was a calcium or vitamin deficiency. I could be wrong.

Good luck and keep us posted on Nico's condition. If he's walking on his wrists that's really not a good thing. Unless it's just for temporarilly.

Nico is worth aaaaall my efforts!

Thanks a lot for your input but... Hmmmm... are you SURE that Brewers Yeast contains Phosphorus? It says 0% - I have the container here in fromt of me, and it says nothing at all about phosphorus... It says: this yeast is exceptionally rich in Selenium, Chromium, Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium, Copper, Manganese, Iron, Zinc, and other factors natural to yeast. Gluton free.

This is the brand I am using. http://www.buyjustnatural.com/lewlabbrewye.html

If you are right about the phosphorus thing - I will stop giving it to them right away!

oh - that is so nice of you to offer to send me this capsules! But maybe you don't have to - I am going to USA now in August! New York & Florida. So if you tell me the name of this vitamin B product I can look for it myself.
