back into PTS (Corucia zebrata)!

jmorris May 04, 2005 12:50 PM

I haven't had a Prehensile Tailed Skink since I sold my single male, Oscar, in 2003. I may now be acquiring uo to seven individuals through an adoption, and am very excited to be getting back into PTS.

I have scaned the forum back to when I left, and didn't see any mention of what happened to Corucia Conservation Aliance (CCA) and its founder Laura Osanitch, or the Southern Florida Corucia Research Center (SFCRC). In fact, I don't even see any of the regular PTS keepers from a few years back. Where have they all gone... are you guys out there lurking or under different screen-names?

If the old associations are gone, are there new ones private owners can join?

Thanks,
Jared

Wow, came across 7 adoptee’s, I wish I were in your shoes, I have 1.2 right now, and want to expand to double or triple that number. So that I can get a good sized personal project going with them. They are amazing animals, hard to come by up here though.

Where are you located? I am in Northern Ca, and am bursting with PTS CB CB. They are difficult to find if you want one, but also difficult to place if one is picky about where they go! Contact me for details if you are interested in them (send e-mail directly to me, as the forum is not the classified), but prepared to be grilled about your husbandry....
Cheers, Jess b

So where have all the old PTS keepers gone? I am fairly sure most of them are still out there, but don't regulary check into the skink forum anymore- over time I think the people who get to know each other well in the forum start privately e-mailing, and stop looking at the group e-mails. It can get tiring answering similar questions repeatedly. Perhaps you will be the new guiding PTS light for us
I think Laura got very busy with other things in her life and couldn't run the CCA anymore, and I think Brian had a mishap in moving his colonies to a new place, and may have lost them (or some of them)- I can't remember what happened (if anything- I might be totally confused about this).
Anyway good luck with adoptions, I know you will have fun with whomever you get, though no-one will be the same as Oscar!

Hey Jess,
Still bursting at the seams with Corucia...you poor dear. Is everyone still in the one enclosure? How is the baby (human)? She is about a year old now, right? Microchip is a ravenous eater and hyper as ever. My girl, Flicka, had gained over 50 grams the last time I weighed her, and since that was quite a while ago, I am sure she has gained more weight. I am assuming this points to a state of gravidity, if that indeed is a word. I am planning to find out the old fashioned way, but I may end up getting an X-ray. Hopefully, I shall have some correspondence with you soon. Josh

Glad Microchip and Flicka are doing well! I wouldn't bother getting an x-ray until the last month to two months before birth. I did several ultrasounds and x-rays of Gertie for the first pregnancy in my care (Microchip was one of those twins!)- and the skeletons don't calcify until the last 2 months. If you want to know if she has a baby inside, ultrasound in the first 2/3 is the way to go.
SO yes, I have too many in one enclosure :P (7) You would not believe how hard it is to find a good home locally. I have e-mailed a couple of zoos I like, talked to several people in the Northern Ca herp society, CSUS, some other PTS fans I know- and so far no luck. E-mail me if you want to set up another breeding pair and want another little green friend.... Bletcher wants his own enclosure.
Best wishes, Jess b

Hey Jess. Did the contacts I gave you not work out? Email me if you want to discuss it more. Best to reach me now at mcwhitney at gmail dot com. The other account is becoming too unreliable and keeps losing my messages (again).
