terrapin with swollen leg

terpdaddy52 May 04, 2005 02:17 PM

I have a beautiful adult female terrapin who had an open wound on her back foot, and its now swollen. Anyone have any tricks as to relieving the swelling? I will take her to the vet if no one has any ideas. I can't afford to lose her, she is a rare form. Thanks

No tricks here. If you have access to a vet get her there. Sounds like an infection and you will need some antibiotics.

Yeah, take her to the vet. An infection is nothing to fool with, unless you know the exact kind of medicine to cure it and are willing to go it alone and leave it out of the water for long periods of time.

Infections can lead to sepsis, or whatever it's called.

Unlike many reptile problems, swollen appendages often take a long time to resolve, even after a good course of antibiotics. Give the recommended course of Amikacin or Baytril, but don't look for immediate results and be discouraged. if your treatment is correct, it will get better.

Thanks for all your replies. I took her to the vet and they gave me some appropriate meds. She apparently had a bacteria infection, and a few other issues. Being wild caught, it is hard to figure out where she could have gotten it. I will update on her progress!

It's great that you took her. I'm sure you'll see improvement soon. Did the vet also check for parasites/
