Chucks mating

thommy May 04, 2005 03:05 PM

Hi,

just want to show you a pic of my 2003 hatched Chucks. They surprised me a lot by mating at this young age. The literature says that the sexually mature at the age of 4-7years, so I was a lil bit schocked when they started to "make love" this early.
What do you think is it possible that the female will produce fertile eggs or was it just practice.

Bye Thomas

Sexual maturity is more relevant when talking about size than age...I'd say they are definately mature at 4-5 years old, but I wouldn't be surprised to see you have successful clutches either. You never know. My male hasn't even shown any interest in mating yet.

Keep the pictures coming!

Hi John,

I'll keep waiting and see whats going to happen.
The female is about 11 inches, the male is nearly 14. So I think they are a little too small, but who knows.
And I always thougt size doesn't matter

But which girl can overcome the tempation of this guy.
The look, the skin, the angular chin, and thos Bette Davis eyes

You're right...that chiseled jaw-line too... LOL. Glad to have you posting. I can tell by your last message you'll be a lot of fun to have around.

Look forward to those chuck pics. I hope Tom Greb will speak up on this. He's the chuck master, and could tell you the minimal sizes for breeding etc. I'm new to this myself.

Those rocks look similar to what I've seen a few people do with styrofoam and mortar. Looks nice whatever the case may be.

Please let me know any advice if you did it yourself.

John,

you won't find one single authentic rock in this enclosure.
The shell is made of wood, then the back and the sidewalls are covered with styrofoam. Next I used a knife and some styro to make some platforms, which were glued to the walls using silicone. The same way I did the hiding-caves and the egglaying-box.
When the silicone is dry the styro gets plastered with cement.
You can see the viv at this stage in the pic below, in the next post I'll tell you the next steps

Ok,

next step, let it dry. To protect the cement to the lizard claws I used water proofed wood glue to seal it.
The wood glue was mixed with dispersion paint to get some rocklike color. Then the glue was coated on the walls and thrown with sand.
After doing that with every wall, youre finished the tank, and your back will hurt a lot
Hope my english wasn't too bad so you can follow and understand the short tutorial.

Your English is great. I haven't seen too many People from the US do that much artificial rock work yet. I've read a lot about it and have devoted lots of money to learning material, but just haven't tried it. It's beautfully done though...Very nice.

Your Uros are very nice too.

Thanks for the help.

It seems that females will produce eggs at about 125mm svl and they can reach that in their first year however I do not recommend this as at that small size they females seem to have problems with egg binding. I imagine it is about similar size for the male to produce viable sperm(HEHE Johne I said sperm!). If you look below the clutch of redtail eggs was produce by a cb 2003 female. She is no longer than 10 inches that's for sure. One other chuck breeder told me that like some tortoises a female chucks first clutch will be duds but as you can see she must have been wrong. I hope you get eggs-chucks are awesome lizards. Yours are very handsome. Your male looks just like Eve's Chewalla. Tom

Johne May 05, 2005 07:57 PM

Tom said Sperm, and I heard someone talk about Semen Mountains on the collared forum. Where ARE the moderators???? LOL

I thought the same thing about that lizard looking like Chewalla!
Those stripes are nice.
