My crested gecko bit me

mach5speedy433 May 04, 2005 03:49 PM

Recently, as I have done before, I put my finger against the glass by the gecko and it reacts to it, sees it, but recently it dives into the glass trying to grab my finger, or when it's right next to it, she snatches at the glass, so when I went to pick her up to put her by the cup with crickets in it, she bit me.

She's been so relaxed and friendly, why is she suddenly aggressive? Is this mating season?

could be the fact that she is startled considering she is probably sleeping when you go to get her.

i wouldnt recommend handling them any more than what is necessary to care for them. they are not the type of pet that particularly likes to be handled, yes they do tolerate it, but that does not necessarily mean they enjoy it.

if you feed out of a bowl the crested will be able to get to them when its hungry and should be left to feed on its own, unless you are having specific problems with it not eating well on its own.

some cresteds are tame, others get very skittish and nervous when a hand is going after them, it would probably be best if you left her alone for a while.

Ive been bitted twice by two different geckos. I was helping them shed a bit and the give me a little bite. I hold them for 30 minutes each daily and they are so calm, I dont think they like the help shedding! I hand feed my cresteds CGD and Baby Food!

I wonder whether it hurts them to help them shed since others have had similar experiences to yours? I've never seen any of mine have trouble shedding; I mist them all (just heavily enough that it dries before the next spraying) morning and evening. Labor-intensive for sure, but I consider it preventive maintenance.

I think she bite you because you keep teasing her by having your finger outside of the cage where she can see it but not reach it. She just became wise, waiting for the time you actually put your finger into the cage where she can get it. But for the most part, crested geckos are not very bitty, only times I have been bit it has been strickly a food response (one time I had a silkworm between my fingers and he just missed, the other, putting her food dish down. I either startled her or she was trying to eat the dish LOL).
