nail clipping

urobatista May 04, 2005 05:37 PM

i've not read anything about how often, if at all, a uro's nails...er...claws...whatever have to be clipped. my mali's still an infant and i don't think his nails are particularly long yet, but i was curious for the future. what is the common practice with this?
thanks

I don't usually have to clip nails. Just make sure there's some rough surfaced rocks for them to walk and climb over - it keeps them trimmed down naturally. If you find you need to trim them, there's some very good information on it (for iguanas, but the principle is the same) on Melissa Kaplan's site: www.anapsid.org

I got my mali's from a rescue and their nails were ridiculously long. I had to cut them or risk all the skin on my hands. I used the info on Melissa Kaplan's site too. That was a couple of months ago now and I haven't had to do a thing to them again.

when i first got hugo his nails were so long that it raised his toes up off the ground and made him walk funny. i did have to trim them down but since living with alot of rocks, i have never had to do it again

I have had Archie for, oh drat I always lose track, 6 or 7 years, and have trimmed his toes *maybe* 2 or 3 times. I am guessing twice. I have not even contemplated it since I moved him to the wood and glass tank though. When he digs through the sand and hits the wood he wears down his toenails very efficiently!
