A few of us headed down south this past weekend for spring herping. Three of us flew into Baltimore and then met up with the fourth to drive down to the Carolinas. Friday morning it was rainy and high fifties for temps when we started the drive. As we got into North Carolina, it had warmed up only slightly to 62/63 degrees. We headed east off 17 and the first spot we checked had 4 southeastern crowned snakes and a broad-headed skink. Across the street, we found a ringneck and a spotted salamander. Travelling south we found a DOR spotted turtle and DOR racer. Around Edenton, NC, we stopped to check a few boards we saw off the road and a large board at the bottom of a ditch had two Eastern King snakes! These both had nice patterns but were in rough shape. One of them had what looked like several eye caps stuck on an eye. The larger one was probably 4 feet. A little further on the drive we found a nice Copperhead under some tin back in the woods behind a run-down house. As we got further south in NC, we found a canal we walked at dusk that had numerous water snakes and at least one large cottonmouth dive into the water. We also saw a box turtle and two racers here.
The next day we left Wilmington, NC heading for Charleston, SC. We stopped in Georgetown,SC and within a couple minutes found a nice eastern hognose snake crawling in the open. This was sent on its way after the performance. This was the only snake seen on Saturday. I'll attach some picts now and add the others later when they have been uploaded.
