Non proportional thermostats

DeRyke22 May 04, 2005 08:59 PM

I was wondering what kind of luck people have been having using non proportional thermostats. I keep my entire collection in visions with 11 inch heat tape that are all ran on a on-off type thermostat. I have been thinking about purchasing a Helix or something of that nature and wanted some feedback. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

All of my stuff is kept with helix thermostats. I don't use anything else. If you use an on-off style thermostat with heat tape you run the risk of getting hot spots depending on where you put the probe. And helix thermostats will hold a nice constant temp and you can have a night drop temp that you can program for any temp you want. I am 100% a helix fan I WILL NOT use anything else. Sure there are ones just as good but helix thermostats get the job done, and if they freak out they turn off instead of going on full blast.

I use Ranco thermostats in my racks, and have had no problems for many years.

I also use oil filled heaters, when needed(on Rancos) to keep an ambiant room temp.

Granted there will be a more precise temp with a propotional themostat, but I haven't seen any need for them in my racks.

I know some old school guys who don't like thermostats at all, and use dimmers, with good results.

My hot spots are always within 2deg F, and my aninmals dont seen to mind this slight fluctuation.

for incubation I use proportional, but thats the only place.

I know someone who recently lost two animals to a cheap dimmer switch mishap. I prefer the proportional thermostats...just in case.

Heya Travis, take a look at the "Herpstat" too.
It controls 500watts and it has settings for on/off,proportional,incubation mode,5 power settings, and a cooling mode too.

I bought mine here.
