Clear nails and hypomelanism seperate genes...**Randy***

InTheBlue May 05, 2005 12:09 AM

After taking a second look at Kevins site I realize I was remebering wrong and the starter dragon for the hypo/snow line did have clear nails. Since this is true and Kevin doesn't breed for clear nails it makes total sense that they would be seperate genetic defects. Still haveing a hypo appearance without clear nails. I guess I was thinking like a stuck record but I see what your saying now.

Very interesting. Do you think the hypopastels and leusistics could be a form of hypomelanism where the clear nails are linked and this hypo/snow line could be a different mutation where the clear nails can be bred out through recession? Makes since that they could be a co-dom hypo with clearnialed receesive. What are your thoughts?

Hey Robert,
Hmmm were to start. This is a long long series of hypothesis that I have been discussing with a few people. Just to throw a few things out.

It could be possible that we are dealing more than one hypomelanistic gene in BDs.

It is also possible that the clear nails is a phenotype associated with a certain hypomelanistic genotype.

On the other hand it is also possible that the loci for a hypomelanistic gene is close to or right next to the clear nail gene in which case during segregation and recombination of the genome they would almost always be on the same genetic fragment. Therefore dissociating and recombining together "95%" of the time.

It also could be completely separate in which case you could basically line breed the clear nail trait but keep the hypomelanistic look. Many of DBNs snows look like hypopastels with clear nails but do not have clear nails. From what I understand that is a completely different line from Kevin Dunne's Snows were the Breedings have been somewhat more random with respect to clear nails. This is part of the reason I think there is so much variability in the snows produced at DD.

Well I am at work and didn't really get a chance to go into any other possibilities but there are few I think??? Always good talking to you Robert.

This hasbeen my theory for some time too! We have to be....................

I also think that inlight of getting a new record that doesn't stick...LOL..... That Brandons snows are a dominate form of hypomelanism of the hypomelanistic traits. I don't think that line even produces a tannish type hypo/snow does it? The color is also hardly faded in this line as compared to the hypo/snow line from DD. Mainly just black removed. I think your right about the DD hypo/snow line being more versatile in patterning and coloration and I believe it is directly linked to the "recessive co-dominant" and dominance (or snow)as well as the clear nails. Kevin told me ove the phone that the ones with clear nails had much more reduced patterns and were generally lighter with more faded color than the rest.

Great views.... gladsomeone bumped the machine and allowed the rest of the record to play! LOL

Hi

I hate to jump in to this intelligent conversation about genetics but what are the "Brandon" snows. Are there any pics of them around? Would like to see a snow that doesn't show any tan. Why wouldn't they be more considered the "marketed" leucistic? Do they have clear nails? Thanks

Brandon at DBN the snows that he had. Those are the ones we are referring to. They are a different line of Snows than Dragons Den.
