Good types of wood to put into tank?

viper69 May 05, 2005 02:19 AM

I am looking for some wood, something with the hardness of say sandblasted grapevine, that I can put into my enclosure but won't rot.

My grapevine is rotting a bit on the bottom.

Any suggestions?

I am a huge fan of Manzanita. Cypress is also a good choice.

Manzanita goes wild all over my are of California, but you can also buy it from Black jungle and some other viv supply stores. Corkscrew Willow branches might be a good substitue for manzanita, but I've never used them.

Cypress is more expensive, but cypress knees are some of the coolest viv/aquaria decoration wood I've ever seen. hears a link to a nice example of what can be found out there: http://www.amazonmoosey.com/swampwoodknees.htm

What part of California are you in? I'm down in Pasadena. I need to find some of those manzanita patches.

nor-Cal, near Sacramento. It really only grows in central and nothern Cali from what I understnad, so you might just have to come up this way to get some for free. but let me warn you, you will put in some sweat equity to harveting it, as it is an EXREMELY hard wood, especialy when green.
