My turtle coughed up blood this morning....

trish May 05, 2005 08:52 AM

Yesterday he was sneezing and today he coughed up a blood clot. I am bringing him to the vet today. I just want to know if anyone else's turtle has done this and if he will be ok. I think it's my fault, I let him sleep under my bed instead of his tank the other night. Does anyone know what the vet will do to him?

I'm very sad about this

It may not necessarily be your fault. Sleeping under your bed (though NOT a good idea) would most likely not cause him any harm. (unless he swallowed something -- but-- sliders do not eat on dry land so the likelihood that this happened is pretty slim.

There could be any of a number of reasons why he did this. Infection may be a likely culprit. Can't say for sure what the vet will do because we don't know what's wrong with the turtle.

Good luck -- keep us posted.

Took him to the vet today and he got xrayed and an antibiotic shot. The doctor couldnt see anything wrong with him. I have to bring a stool sample back in case its a parasite. But when he came home he puked and now he's just sitting there.

Thanks.

Just to make sure, is your vet a reptile vet? It may seem like a stupid question but you want to make sure they have good reptile experience or it can be detrimental to your turtle.

I'm not sure...he does do exotics though. Alot of the places I called wouldn't take turtles. Right now my turtle is just getting a series of antibiotic shots, what could happen to him?
