When I was a kid, hoping to get a chameleon, I would look at this picture in our "young students encyclopedia". It showed two big, meller's chameleons. I then saw one on Nickelodean's "wild side" show, eating a big cockroach. I wished I could someday have one.
I learned from a guy in PA how extensive the acclimation process was, and all that was involved. I also learned how personable they could be once they were used to you - heck, I saw it at Pete's house in PA. They were actually very outgoing, and would come near you if they were out of their cage.
Stil I waited for captive bred animals. I passed by a few opurtunites, heard horror stories of them from some CIN people. then I bought one from a breeder in florida. It was DOA. The replacement died the same day it arrived. too delicate for captivity? Well, turns out, these were hatchlings, so it shouldn't have been surprising. I still had hope.
Well, here it is. Over three months old, and going strong.
I got 6 of these in from Kristina at the melleri discovery, to show at the raleigh reptile and exotic animal show. Not only did these guys survive shipping, reacclimation to a new home, and then a weekend at a reptile show, they were feeding in front of people constantly. They're thriving. I've had them going on two weeks, and all looks great.
Of course, I HAD to keep one of them for myself. Here is a picture Kristina took of him prior to sending them to me.
