Help Big Female Ball not eating?

anson May 05, 2005 11:39 AM

I have a large female rescue that is 2049 grams. I have her for about a year and she has always been a great eater of live or FT.
She has refused food for about two months now. Should I be worried or is this normal. Also she eats really big FT rats when I thaw and warm them and she refuses them can I re use them or do I have to throw them out? I hate to waste them.

I would say it's normal. Also, check your temps and humidity. Make sure she's getting enough heat. If your very worried, take her a the vet. Get a fecal done, but since you say she hasn't eaten for you in months, then that could be a problem.
There can be some possiblities why she's not eating. Possible RI?
Is she drinking for you?

The hot side is 90 and run by a thermostat and the cool side can go into the mid 80's because the room itself gets pretty hot. I am in FL It is probably about a month or a bit more since the last time she ate. She has not been with a male at all and was vet checked by the rescue facility before arriving.
I see no signs of respiratory infection. No open mouth breathing or clicking sounds. No coughing or sneezing.
Could she be gravid even though she was not bred. She has not lost any weight at all and seems like she may have even gained.
Could she get parasites from FT rats?

You know what, I have told you can't really get any parisites in F/t Rats, but my Vet told me there are parisite eggs that can live threw very cold conditions, and hatch when warmed up. But I don't know. It could happen?

A month or two is not abnormal even this time of year, I had a big guy that I had as a rescue that only ate every two months. As long as she's not looking like she's loosing a lot of mass or acting lethargic I would not worry too much about it. make sure her temps are good and she's got plenty of water.

Even though she was on F/T you might need to go back to a couple of live feeds to help her get her eating instincts back on que (try live small rats instead of big ones tho). Also if she was in a breeding program before you got her there might be a possiblity that she retained some sperm from her last breeding and she could now be gravid.
