Custom built cage for uro? More humidity concerns?

Nicodemus Jul 11, 2003 03:01 PM

Ok, so someone correct me if I'm wrong about this:

In general an open highly ventilated cage is better for regulating humidity than a glass aquarium tank of some sort?

For example, If I custom built a sort of uromastyx hutch with screen on 3 or 4 sides for ventilation, I can drive out humidity better using heat lamps and fans and such despite the humidity in the room.
However, given the same local climate, its much harder to drive down humidity in a 55 gallon tank or something similar.

As I stated before, I live in massachusetts where our humidity has hit 70%. Would a custom, highly ventilated cage be better to keep humidity down than buying a 55 gallon tank?
And again, will I even be able to bring down the humidity to that 20-40% level to keep the animal healthy?

Should I even bother trying in this climate?

I live in south georgia so when I built my enclosure I was also worried about humidity. my enclosure is only vented on top and the humidity almost never gets above 50%. I would not put screen on the sides because if your uro is like mine and likes to climb the sides of the cage he would probably rub his nose raw on the screen. A screen cage would also be very hard to keep warm enough for a uro. I you would like I could send you pics and dimensions for my tank.
