I wasn't sure how many visited the king snake field forum but I'll be posting pics of a few of the nigra and calligaster we have seen lately in KY for those of you that like that sort of thing. - Phil

Very nice, he looks a little like that anerysristic mud snake I found last year in NC. (minus the yellow chin) - Shiny black above and white creeping up from the sides.
Here's a pic of him. I took a few pics of him, then released him . . .All the pics turned out crappy (it was getting dark and the flash was broke), this one is the only halfway decent one, sorry - (not a kingsnake, sorry)

What a find! Cool looking snake. - Phil

Thanks! This was the only non-red mudsnake I've ever found. All the others (and I've found a lot) always had the fiery red bellies instead!

Very nice Phil. So this one was found in the heart of Jefferson co? Do the nigra show up in the more populated areas of the county, or only found more in the rural areas of Jefferson co? I have some family in Middletown and also some family near the small airport (bowman field)Wasn't sure if Nigra sometimes show up in peoples yards, under decks, in residential areas of the county. Excellent pic, I'm getting ready to check out your pics on the Field photos forum.

Thanks Steve. I guess technically that snake was found in Louisville KY since the city and county merged lol! A king around Middletown would be a tough find. Its as much a matter of geography as anything. The lay of the land in eastern Jefferson county simply is not good habitat for kings. That is also a heavily populated area. In southwestern Jefferson county where I live the king is a common snake. I have found them in my backyard on more than a few occasions. This part of the county is slightly more rural and has the wooded upland habitat that kings prefer. If ever in the area let me know. I'd be glad to show you a few kings if possible. - Phil
