My Box Turtle Pen

RobBierman May 05, 2005 05:45 PM

This pen is located in my backyard, and this is what got me into turtles/tortoises :D
This is what it looks like from the door walking out there to it.

Part of the pen

Here they are eating a snack of Carrots I do not feed this to them often and STRAWBERRIES- a favorite.

Here are some Lillies (One of the few things they will not eat, or brake.

As you can see in the very first photo there is a Rock wall so the cannot escape.
These are individual homes all around the back of this wall. They are not noticable at all unless you are in the pen. I think they are ugly but the turtles love them, so I will leave it.

Hiding

Dont worry there is a ramp back there. They lay a lot of there eggs back behind the houses.

Climbing. They all will get up there if it floods bad, which has happened about 3 times.

I have cleaned the water dish, and i have also added cypress mulch around the tree, it looks better! In the future there will not be a water dish, There will be a stream made out of concrete that goes through the "rock city" like a little river :D

Holy Macaroni! That's cool!

I think the little houses look cool too!

Do many of the eggs hatch?

very nice. I also have envisioned a concrete or rock style creek or pond for my next outdoor enclosure project. something maybe that has a metered flow/self replenishing. you're in Houston? I'm just north of there in Huntsville.
Woo-Hoo! Texas Rules, ya'll!!

Those are great photos! Thank you so much for posting them!!
That is exactly what my DH has been describing as far as the walls go. He's been talking about building the pen with brick high enough that they can't see through it or get out but the way you put the flat rocks on top as sort of a barrier looks great. My worry has been that if the brick is straight up, the turtles will climb out. He talked about staggering the bricks, anyway..
I can't wait to show him these pictures.
er maybe Ah oughta say Ah cain't wait tah show him these pictures ya'll cuz he's gonna won't them Texas bricks in there too.

ps also meant to ask...
looks like you got numerous desert(western)ornates, a few three-toed's, and is that a rear shot of a gulf coastie in one of those pics by itself?
