Average clutch sizes for pits??

wesss May 06, 2005 12:25 AM

Was just wondering what you all have experienced?
What is the most eggs you ever got from a pit?
What is the least amount of eggs you got from a pit?
How long do your eggs usually take to hatch?
What temps do you incubate at?
Do you use a homeade or store bought incubator?
Ever had a pit that didnt use a nest box?
Do you double clutch your females?
Thanx in advance for any and all replies.

Check out the Pituophis Page at kingsnake.com...listed under Care Sheets/FAQs/Features.

My personal experience has been with Pine Snakes, so take this for what its worth.

Clutch size
La Pines-2-4
Black Pines-4-8
N Pines-8-12
Fl Pines-6-10

Incubated at 80-82 degrees usually yields neonates in 62-65 days.

Lots of incubation mediums, personal preference is vermiculite.

Have never used incubators...placed on high shelf in bedroom closet, w/thermometer to measure temp has worked like a charm for me.

Never had a pit not use a nest box; just need to make one available once they complete the pre-laying shed.

Never tried to double clutch a pine snake...don't think its good for the snake.

As mentioned earlier, check out the Pituophis Page. A lot of experienced herpers contributed content and husbandry info and can tell you all you need to know.
