maternal incubation ?

screamingwoman May 06, 2005 12:04 PM

I am hoping for bp eggs next month. She is in the blue now. I have a problem the incubator is full of corn and beardie eggs. They should all hatch before mid June. Can I have mom incubate for a few weeks if needed? Once the others have hatched I can transfer to the incubator. This is my first clutch of bp eggs. They are from normal/pastel parents. Don't want to take any risks. But what are my options?

Viewed the sub forum (husbandry and breeding) but notice no new postings there.....is that one extinct?

You can probably pickup a Hobavator to suit your needs.
If you go that route, I'd suggest a backup simple on/off
thermostat as a safety (...Not a bad $30 insurance policy...).
Good luck!

...I'm not sure on the beardie eggs, but the corn eggs can take moderate daily temp fluctuations(especially near term), so they can be removed, placed on a shelf and will incubate fine, but the BP's need fairly controlled temps of 89F...so if a 2nd incubator for some reason isn't an option, I'd do the switch...

...another thing regarding maternal inc to incubator switch, sometimes it's hard to move eggs depending on where they were laid, plus there's risk in handling the eggs, so I'd advise against that...

Good luck!
