ensuring pregnancy

sutorherp1 May 06, 2005 03:14 PM

When I introduce my male to my female(s), how long should I leave them together? I know I should introduce him a few times (if she is showing positive responce to him) several days apart yto ensure she gets pregnant, but I am not sure when they hook up, when I should seperate them. When they have finished mating for a while and seperated to hiding places should I seperate them? Or should I leave them for a day? Is she in any hard of the male after mating? It sounds like common sence, but I want other opinions and am not taking any chances my females. Thanks,
-Sean

Most likely, you will see them breed. Introduce the female into the male's enclosure, the male will likely chase her around. Put them together a few times a week, for a couple hours out of the day.

I introduced her around 5 and its now almost 8. The male was following her and twitching like crazy, and she was twitching a bit. She straightened out fully a few times, didn't seem to be defensive to the male at all. They are now curled up under the males hider together, but not mating. My hondurans have been very active every night, so that may be a good time for them to breed. Should I leave them over night? Thanks,
-Sean

I removed them after about 5 and a half-6 hours. They coiled up for a few hours and hid like they normally would hide, but together. I don't think they copulated but it's possible. I'm going to reintroduce them mabey sunday or monday. Do I run a risk of my male harming her if I leave them overnight next time? They seemed completely tollerant of eachother. Also, should I remove the hider, or use something more accessable? Should I wait till her next shed? I read from Shannon Brown's breeding info that pheramones are released then. Is it possible that lighting at night, such as a red light, could decrease the chance of breeding?

Light won't affect anything. Remove the hide area, I introduced a female blue eastern garter into my male melanistic eastern garter's enclosure last night, removed the hide area, and the male immediately started following her. They mated a couple of times and are actually still going at it.

You can leave them overnight if you want, I won't suggest leaving them together, or seperating them, it's your choice.

You can wait until after she sheds, if may or may not make a difference. The male will try and mate with her either way.

diff kinds of milks can exhibit different behavior, so people can give you the best responses if you tell what kind of snake you're talking about.
