Can a female leo become gravid without a male's presence at all?

chibicricket May 06, 2005 03:44 PM

This might be a very stupid question, but I've heard some females reptiles lay eggs even when they have never had any contact with a male. Is that true with leos? If so, what are the signs of a gravid female?

Yes, they can. The signs are the same as when they have been with a male. Scratching around, digging, not eating for about 3 days before they lay, and of course getting fat..lol. After hte eggs are laid you can just dispose of them.

Ok. My female is about a year old, and within the past week or so, her appetite hasn't been quite as big as usual, and she's been scratching like crazy at the bottom of her tank. I use damp paper towels in her humid hide, which help with shedding, but I wouldn't know if she was digging or not. She's also gotten quite fat in a really short time, but I can't tell if she has eggs. I would be able to see that easily, right? Should I put an egg laying box in with her just to be on the safe side?

I would definately put a nesting box in with her. you usually can see the eggs, or at least feel them, but if it is her first time laying you may not be able to, or if the eggs are infertile (which they are) they are smaller and less palpable.

Thank you so much for the picture. She does have something very similar to that, just not as large. I put a dish with moist soil in it, and I guess I'll have to wait to see what happens.

No problem . Sometimes first time layers don't lay in the nesting box..just a bit of info (it would be more important if the eggs might be fertile).
